Rules of the premises

Dear visitors,

Welcome to the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site! Our gatekeeper teams and the staff at the Ruhr. Visitorcenter at the Coal Washery and at the Information Points will be happy to answer any questions you may have. They will also provide you with information material and guidance.

As the owner, Zollverein Foundation has the task of preserving the Zollverein World Heritage Site and making it accessible to visitors. Please note that the entire site is private property. To ensure that your visit is as pleasant as possible, we kindly ask you to observe the following instructions:

Your safety

The Zollverein World Heritage Site is a former industrial site with typical railway tracks, stairways, and piping. Despite safety precautions and regular checks, we cannot guarantee complete safety on the paths and squares, also due to the constant need for maintenance and construction work and the associated construction site traffic. Therefore, please keep an eye on potholes, possible unevenness and tripping hazards.

Against this background, we ask for your understanding that Zollverein Foundation accepts no liability for damage to property or personal injury caused by simple negligence. Entering and driving on the World Heritage Site is at your own risk. We ask you to pay particular attention, especially when leaving paved paths.

It is not permitted to enter fenced-in areas as there may be a danger to life. We must report any violations to the police. On some areas and paths there is no or only limited winter maintenance.

Consideration for others

Every visitor has the right to an enjoyable stay. We kindly ask all guests to show consideration and not to disturb or endanger other people. Any violations will be reported as trespassing.

Fires and barbecues

Open fires (including barbecues and pyrotechnic items) are not permitted.

Dogs

Four-legged friends are welcome at the World Heritage Site and are allowed in the open areas. Please keep your dog on a short lead. Please help us keep the World Heritage Site clean by removing any droppings. Please note that animals are not allowed in all buildings, as some of them are museum and exhibition spaces. Assistance dogs are, of course, exempted from this.

Roads and road traffic regulations (StVO)

Driving on the premises is only permitted on paved roads. The speed limit on public roads (Fritz-Schupp-Allee, Martin-Kremmer-Straße, Bullmannaue, Im Welterbe, and Kokereiallee) is 30 km/h. On all other paths, speed is restricted to walking pace. Please be aware of pedestrians, cyclists, and children and drive carefully. The provisions of the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) apply.

Restrictions during events

During certain events, Zollverein Foundation reserves the right to restrict access to the site in terms of time and space. We kindly ask you to observe the daily updated information.

Car parks

Please only use the designated car parks A1, A2, B, and C as well as the Zollverein parking deck, which is subject to a charge. Cars parked incorrectly will have to be towed away at the owner’s expense to ensure access for the fire brigade and emergency services at all times.

Motorhomes, tents etc.

Camping and overnight stays in motorhomes, camper vans, tents etc. are not permitted anywhere on the site. Information on motorhome sites in the surrounding area can be found “Plan your Visit” section at https://www.zollverein.de/zollverein-unesco-world-heritage-site/plan-your-visit-to-zollverein/.

Guided tours

Guided tours of the site are organised and conducted exclusively by Zollverein Foundation. If you would like to take part in a guided tour, please contact the Zollverein Monument Path Visitor Service at besucherdienst@zollverein.de or call 0201 246810.

Photo, sound, and film recordings

Photography, sound and film recordings that are not exclusively for private use require written permission from Zollverein Foundation. Please send your requests to filmfoto.genehmigung@zollverein.de.

We thank you for your understanding and wish all guests a pleasant stay at the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site.
